With recent advancements in battery and energy storage, many mobility companies are expanding into the electric two-wheeler market. Segway, which entered the segment last year with a powerful electric scooter, is now pushing forward with two new sleek e-bikes: the Xafari and Xyber.
Both models were unveiled at the CES 2024 and showcase cutting-edge electric mobility technology. While both are classified as electric bicycles in the U.S., the Xafari fits neatly into this category, whereas the Xyber straddles the line between an e-bike and an e-motorcycle.
“We’re excited to introduce the Segway Xafari and Xyber, representing a major step forward in e-bike innovation,” said Alan Zhao, General Manager of Segway’s E-Bike Division. “These bikes reflect Segway’s commitment to pioneering technology and outstanding performance. With adjustable features, superb stability, and advanced connectivity, they redefine off-road adventures.”
Both bikes feature serious off-road capabilities and advanced smart technology, including Active Scene Perception. Segway explains that this system adjusts the bike’s settings based on road conditions and user preferences. For instance, the bike uses sensors to adapt to its environment, locking itself, adjusting headlights, and changing power levels in real-time.
They also pair with mobile apps to track real-time data like mileage, speed, calories burned, and cadence, as well as offering mobile alarms, GPS anti-theft functions, and location-based alerts.
However, the similarities between the Xafari and Xyber end there. The Segway Xafari is a practical adventure e-bike with wide tires, a step-through design, and dual suspension. It’s powered by a 750W rear motor, delivering 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) of torque, and a large 913Wh battery integrated into the frame, which is still removable. While Segway hasn’t shared specific details on top speed and range, it claims that this combination will outperform the average U.S. e-bike.
Designed for off-road enthusiasts, the Xafari features 26-inch fat tires for improved grip and comfort, along with 70mm of front suspension and 80mm at the rear.
In contrast, the Segway Xyber is a more rugged, long-distance e-bike, with features reminiscent of an electric motorcycle. It’s equipped with dual suspension, a large seat for two riders, and can travel nearly 100 miles. Built around a “motorcycle-class double cradle frame system,” the Xyber offers 120mm of suspension travel, an exposed frame design, and a striking X-shaped headlight. The motor produces up to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque, allowing the Xyber to accelerate from 0 to 20 mph (32 kph) in just 2.5 seconds.
The Xyber is powered by a 1,140Wh battery, providing a range of around 47 miles (76 km). However, the bike can hold two batteries, doubling the range to approximately 95 miles (153 km).
We are excited to announce that the Segway Xyber and Xafari models will be available very soon at our Osborne Park store in Perth, Western Australia.
